Security Tip – 5 Stop leaving your keys in the lock

Security number 5 is to warn you about leaving your keys in the lock, mainly because it is not safe to do so for a number of reasons:

1. It increases your chance of getting locked out. Some UPVC mechanism always require you to use a key on the outside to open the door. The two main types of UPVC doors that will have this feature are the ones with either fixed handles on the outside or a handle shaped like a paddle.

2. If your keys are in the lock and you have a letter box, either on the door or on the side then buglers can reach inside with a long metal hook and then have access to your property and potentially drive of with your car, if the car keys are on the same key ring.

There are two reasons why people do this: Firstly, they believe that it increases their security and secondly in case of a need for an emergency house evacuation. If you fall into the second category then simply change you euro double cylinder for a thumb turn cylinder (see below)

Security Tip 4 – Garage Security

Garage break in May 2017 Upnor

Security Tip 4 is all about garage security and is of particular interest to those that keep valuable items in their garage, whether it be in a garage that is attached to the house or in a block of garages out of sight. The above picture was taken on the 22 May 2017 in Upnor, Lincoln after it had been broken into earlier that morning. Without going into to much detail, the average garage door is far to easy to break into and by looking at the photo you can see how the garage door was attacked. So, to improve your garage security you have two options: Option 1, a garage defender or option 2, garage deadbolts.

Option 1 – Garage Defender

A garage defender literally stops the door from fully opening by acting as a barrier. The garage door can still be open by an inch or two. The advantage to a garage defender is that it is a visible deterrent, which is useful when you own a garage that isn’t located at your house. The main disadvantage is that it is unsightly and that the corners of the door can be bent around it. Although, someone could therefore gain access they will not be able to take large items out of your garage. However, you must have a good quality padlock, with a cover over the key way to protect it from dirt and grit. A garage defender with a padlock costs in and around £80 and will cost a hours labour to fit. If you decide to fit this yourself then you will need to buy HSS drill bits to ensure that you can drill through the concrete.

Option 2 – Garage deadbolts

Garage deadbolts fit to the inside of the garage door, with a key way cut into the door so that the deadbolts can be used from the inside or out. There are two deadbolts, operated by the same key and they are fitted to both left and right hand side of the garage door. The deadbolt, when operated after fitting, goes through the garage door, the garage frame and into the brick work. The pair of deadbolts costs £35 and will take 1.5 hrs labour to fit. The main advantage to the garage deadbolts is the high level of security it provides, more so than the garage defender. When fitted and from the outside they generally look far smarter and appealing than the garage defender. The only disadvantage is that it is a tricky job to fit, so if you are not skilled enough with a drill and pop rivet gun then you should probably leave it to someone that is.

Security Tip 3 – Do not give the thief a step up on the ladder

Do not give the thief a step up on the ladder, especially near an open window

Security tip 3 is really about not leaving objects in your garden that can be used to access an open window, whether it be on the ground floor or the first floor. Objects such as ladders, bins and bike sheds, which can easily be moved so that the thief can climb on top of and gain access to your property.

If you do need to store ladders in your garden then please secure them to the wall with a quality chain and padlock. A good quality chain should have a Secure by Design Gold rating.
